Today I am making choices to benefit my overall health and fitness. I am already cooking “relatively” healthy with lots of fruits and vegetables and mostly fresh products, I make most things myself to avoid added sugars, artificial food dyes and preservatives. But I am overweight and I want to do something about it. I now need to make a plan and stick to it. And avoid fad diets or gimmicky weight-loss plans that promise quick results. Instead, I need to adhere to the tried and tested method of eating healthy (emphasizing on fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat protein sources like lean meats and beans. Avoiding saturated and trans fats and foods with added sugars), exercising (that’s a tough one since I am really no sporty chick) and controlling my calories.

But losing weight is not easy, being an emotional over-eater. I eat when I am feeling bored or lonely. Food serves as a distraction. When I’m worried about an upcoming event or stewing over a conflict, I focus on eating comfort food instead of dealing with the painful situation. The emotions return, and I am then bearing the additional burden of guilt about setting back my weight-loss goal. I need to find a way to accept my current life and break this unhealthy cycle. I need to find peace of mind, a certain level of mindfulness.

I gained 5 kg over the past 5 months, and am really not feeling well at the moment. I need to get back on track asap…. so this morning I went for a really short (6,6 km) walk in the neighbourhood, rethinking my goals. I need a kick in the but!!

It made me really happy that  I found these elderflowers during my walk. There were almost no fragrant, edible flowers left, but I took some cuttings in the hope of growing a tree at my home.

Back home, I had a great and really encouraging chat with the sweet Mariska from My Chefs’ apron and she made me realize it is all a matter of mindset. If you’re unhappy with yourself and the way that you look, you won’t be able to lose weight. Self-acceptance is key. My self-esteem shouldn’t be measured by what the scales says. She made me realize that  when I am kinder to myself, and practice positive thinking, my body will start to work in my favor. And the weight will go down.
